Spotlight On: Josef from JJW

This week, we sat down with Josef, the Founder and Creative Director of JJW Studio. He filled us in on all things content creation, how he has become so successful in the industry and how video marketing amplifies & accelerates brand messaging. Grab a coffee and let’s chat…

Hi Josef, thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us. Can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself and JJW Studio?

JJW Studio is a Sydney-based video and content creation agency dedicated to helping fashion, wellness, and lifestyle brands craft dynamic video content. I founded the agency out of a love for helping people amplify and absorb the beauty of everyday life through video. My goal was to reach as many people as possible, so I launched JJW Studio to scale and make an impact.

From a young age, I was captivated by the magic of cinema and its ability to create whole new worlds on screen. This fascination led me to start making short films at the age of fourteen, and I’ve never looked back.

Beyond the agency, I’m an avid plant collector, a cook, and a lover of all things pop culture. My passion for pop culture helps me stay on top of trends for our clients – my mind is always buzzing with new ideas!

What does a typical day look like for you at JJW?

I typically start by reading a handful of industry trades to see how the market is performing, what trends are emerging and who else is making great work within video production. I’ll then jump onto Pinterest and scroll through seeking inspiration and keeping my mind vibrant with ideas – I’ll pin any images that jump out to me and have them for safekeeping when it comes time to build mood boards for our clients.

Once the day is well and truly on the move, I could be at a shoot or in an edit session, writing up proposals or marketing the agency itself. It’s always a mixed bag of activities that I thrive on, and I have my trusty project management tools to keep me on track every step of the way.

You’ve been creating video content for over a decade, and in that time there have been some huge shifts in the way businesses and brands use video. What are some of the biggest changes you have seen?

I’ve seen many brands understand video content has power and how much of a messaging accelerator it is for them. Video content is no longer for the major brands only, it’s accessible to all who are daring enough to give it a go and fully understand how it works best for them.

There’s been the rise of multiple social media platforms which have become crucial for video content distribution and while it has allowed brands to reach their customers, these platforms also require a level of consistency and fresh ideas to maintain engagement.

The enhanced production quality, especially with smartphones, has been exciting to witness. Smartphone video content is great when brands need to act fast, as in same-day level of fast, and with many friendly editing tools at their fingertips, it certainly helps them become more agile with their marketing efforts.

But my personal favourite is the increased emphasis on storytelling! I love the storytelling element that makes video content so powerful (aesthetics are just as important) but telling an impactful story that inspires people is *chefs kiss*.

Your You Tube channel has just hit over 100,000 views (congratulations!). What do you think are the most important elements that make a great video?

Thank you! I’m so proud of showcasing our client work and our YouTube channel is a constant reminder of that. To me, there is one fundamental element that makes a great piece of video content and that is creating an experience. Creating an experience for your customer is pivotal – no matter how short or long a video is. An experience could be making them feel, learn or be inspired to take action. You can craft an experience for your customer with video content by fusing visual aesthetics and storytelling, it’s a winning formula for us at JJW and always top of mind for us when a new brief lands in our inbox.

What are some of the video trends in 2024 that we should all be taking note of?

The top video trends of 2024 are educational videos, brand explainer videos, behind-the-scenes videos and founder spotlight videos.

Education videos: knowledge is power, and power is engaging! Expect a need from your audience to engage with videos that educate, inform, and empower their purchasing decisions.

Brand explainer videos: break down complex ideas into simple, engaging stories. These videos are set to dominate due to the messaging acceleration your customer expects in 2024, making brand learning fun, accessible and digestible.

Behind-the-scenes videos: go on – lift that curtain to your brand! People are very fascinated about what goes on behind the scenes more than you realise. A sneak peek into the process of adding a human touch to your brand fosters a deeper connection with your customers.

Founder spotlight videos: humanise your brand by showcasing your passion and vision, building trust and authenticity. Differentiate your business through compelling storytelling, emotional connection, and increased brand visibility and credibility. The more comfortable you are being seen and heard, the greater your business growth and success will be.

And to finish off, can you share with us your most memorable project and why?

We just released our latest video for Sisley Paris with famed interior designer Nina Maya. This video is particularly memorable for me because it blends visual aesthetics with storytelling, creating a memorable viewing experience. The APAC Sisley Paris team were wonderful to collaborate alongside, and it was inspiring to spend a day with Nina where we learnt all about her passion for design and life. Not to mention Kourtney Kardashian resided in the house we filmed in this last summer!

If you’re looking to use video more for your brand, or need some direction or advice around how video can help amplify your brand story, be sure to reach out to Josef.
